  19. Actually, I did the S.R. conversion part yesterday, though not the 3rd age
  20. historical bits... synchronicity at work.  The primary goal was to get it
  21. working in an elaborately-carved calendar clock for the famous Maze of Art
  22. in the Ways of Sawall, AmberMUSH, where you can see it on display in the
  23. entryway.  It's in MUSH code, though, which might not be too enlightening
  24. for you, depending on your background.  AmberMUSH is accessible with
  25. telnet or better at lodestar.gb.nrao.edu, port 9999.

  27. I modified JRRT's description of it slightly, though.  He indicates that
  28. our New Year's Day corresponds more or less to the Shire's 8 Jan (meaning
  29. 8 Afteryule, of course), but he also says that Yule and Midyear's Day
  30. should correspond to the solstices; at 8 Afteryule, Midyear's Day ends up
  31. on our 24 Jun, which is annoyingly distant from the solstice.  I decided
  32. unilaterally that some latterday hobbit reformer will have put it back in
  33. order by now by adding in almost a year of Lithe and Yule days over a
  34. decade or so (or leaving out two Overlithes over eight years, which seems
  35. less likely, knowing hobbits), and moved our New Year's Day to 10 Afteryule.
  36. This isn't totally unjustified, since JRRT says he's unskilled in these
  37. matters and may well have made some conversion errors.  This does reasonable
  38. things to the Lithe and Yule solstices both in leap and normal years.

  40. I wrote a perl program that does it also... and produces my .signature
  41. through a named pipe.  Guess I had too much time on my hands this Yule.
