- Gandalf, in The Hobbit, says he went to spy on the Necromancer of Dol
- Guldur (southwest of Mirkwood, I believe, south of Beorn's Cabin).

- Gandalf, in LoTR, at the Council of Elrond, states that afterwards the White
- Council went to clear out the Necromancer, who turned out to be Sauron. They
- had thought one of the Nazgul was making a base there, but they were wrong (or
- partially wrong -- a Nazgul could've been using it as a base, preparing it for
- Sauron).
