  21. Gandalf, in The Hobbit, says he went to spy on the Necromancer of Dol
  22. Guldur (southwest of Mirkwood, I believe, south of Beorn's Cabin).

  24. Gandalf, in LoTR, at the Council of Elrond, states that afterwards the White
  25. Council went to clear out the Necromancer, who turned out to be Sauron.  They
  26. had thought one of the Nazgul was making a base there, but they were wrong (or
  27. partially wrong -- a Nazgul could've been using it as a base, preparing it for
  28. Sauron).
