- Well, Gandalf says, as near as I can recall, "I am a servant of
- the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor."
-
- My guess: "servant of the Secret Fire" means, as was conjectured,
- that Gandlaf serves Eru and the Flame Imperishable.
-
- "Wielder of the flame of Anor": I believe "Anor" means "sun", as
- in "Minas Anor". I don't think Gandalf is specifically related to
- the sun; perhaps he means that his fire, like the Sun's, is in
- the service of Eru and opposed to Darkness. I also think this is
- a reference to his mastery of Narya, the ring of fire.
-
- Do we know anything about Olorin's position in the Maiar
- hierarchy? Perhaps he was another of the fire-spirits who was not
- corrupted by Melkor.
