  40. What are we to make of the case of Wesley Allan Dodd, convicted serial
  41. child rapist-murderer in Washington state who says he wishes to
  42. be executed by hanging, since that is what he did to the 4-year-old
  43. boy who was his last victim?

  45. I find it discouraging that the ACLU wishes to contest this proposal,
  46. and that the only way it seems for someone such as Dodd to be put
  47. out of his own misery and everyone else's is for him to request that
  48. the execution be carried out, ala: Gary Gilmore's request for a
  49. Utah firing squad.

  51. It also seems curious that liberals who would no doubt fight for
  52. Jack Kervorkian's right to kill, would have any qualms about seeing
  53. this man die, who has violated the civil liberties of the innocent
  54. in the most extreme way. Though I may not agree with Rush's strict
  55. "pro-life" position on abortion, he has a point about the effect
  56. of the cheapening of human life which is brought about by rampant
  57. abortion, and even euthanasia, in a society where the unjust taking
  58. of life goes unpunished in many cases.

  60. Does execution deter?
  61. If we were to execute any criminal who murdered while committing
  62. another felony, we could have our answer. If there were fewer
  63. murders associated with the commission of felonies, the effect
  64. of such a law could readily be demonstrated. The necessity
  65. of convicting the accused twice, first of the felony, and then the
  66. capital murder charge, should add an extra measure of protection
  67. against executing the innocent. It would be a good experiment to
  68. try, and might ease jail overcrowding :-}.

  70. How we should deal with the juveniles in this particular case
  71. [Bob Greene's column] is a far more difficult question.

  73. Might we simply delay executing them until they are adults,
  74. mercifully granting them at least a fraction of their lives?
  75. Or, can such children be "rehabilitated"? Are child criminals
  76. any more capable of "rehabilitation" than adults?
  77.  
  78. Accepting for the sake of argument that these children became
  79. "soulless" thanks to their parents, or their environment, what
  80. can be done to help other children who are similarly endangered?
  81.  
  82. For the sake of the victims now, and in the future, our national
  83. "soul" must be found, and healed. And fast.
