  12. I'll word this carefully, because I don't usually comment on translators and
  13. translations (because anyone translating a DW novel is on a hiding to
  14. nothing, _especially_ since so many fans can also read the English originals;
  15. the poor guys doing the work have got thousands of informed critics leaning
  16. over their shoulders)...BUT...

  18. I met my Dutch translator a few months ago, and he gave me a copy of the DW
  19. lexicon he's been building up.  He's really into it, and I got a distinct
  20. impression that he's _good_ at what he does; we spent an hour trading
  21. colloquialisms.  His approach is to try and think in Dutch in the same way I
  22. think in English.  I'm pleased to see him commended on the net.

  24. When a couple of fans of _Another Language_ translation wrote to me to
  25. complain that the books weren't being done properly, I got them to send me a
  26. specimen list of 'errors' and tactfully went though them with the publisher.
  27. At worst, it turned out, the 'errors' boiled down to differences of opinion
  28. as to the best translation, often of archaic words or complex allusions or
  29. puns.  It's a tough job.
