- Summary: Rambling theory of R.E.M., Iran-Contra, and Dan Quayle
-
- Ok, so I know I shouldn't be looking for meaning in the lyrics of
- R.E.M.'s songs, but for several weeks now, I have been resisting the
- urge to release my theory (which is mine) that their latest hit
- single, "Drive", is a tribute to the Iran-Contra thing.
-
- I got the CD for Christmas and immediately popped it in. I listened
- to the song several times while thumbing through my collection of
- Iran-Contra trading cards. I offer here three phrases which support my
- theory:
-
- Snap, crack, Bush whack,
- Tie another one to your rack, baby.
- (Reference to George Bush)
-
- Ollie, .... Ollie, Ollie, in come free
- Hey, kids, where are you,
- Nobody tells you what to do
- (Reference to Ollie North, mastermind of Iran-Contra.
- Currently planning his rise as Dictator of the Americas)
-
- Snap, crack, Shackalack,
- Tie another one to your back
- (Reference to Theodore Shackley, involved in CIA covert
- operations since 1960. Commander of Covert operations
- in 1976-77 under George Bush. Member of the Reagan
- presidency transition team in 1980-81).
-
- The evidence pretty much speaks for itself. I wish I had more time to
- pursue this, but I'm currently finishing up research on my theory that
- Elvis was an undercover agent for the FBI during the Nixon
- administration.
-
-
- ObQuayle: From Iran-Contra trading card #14:
- "Robert Owen, former legislative aide to Indiana Senator Dan
- Quayle, was recruited by NSC staffer Oliver North, CIA hand John
- Hull, (whom he had first met in Quayle's office in 1983), and
- contra leader Adolpho Calero for the crucial role as liaison
- between individuals who were aiding the contras."
-
- It's tempting to beleive that this could explain why Bush was
- obligated to choose Danny as his running mate. Sure, it's a long
- shot, but weigh that against the theory that Bush actually beleived
- that Dan was qualified to be vice president.
