- You know, a funny thing occured to me as I watched the NFL playoffs today.
- Whites are not represented fairly among NFL players. In the game I watched,
- over 50% of the players were black. Therefore, discrimination must be going
- on. I mean, surely the white players are as good as the black players. If
- they aren't, then we must rectify this problem. I suggest athletic
- scholarships for whites only, as they may not have had the same opportunities
- as their black counterparts. Of course, the cry is usually "More blacks in
- management and coaching", but along with this must come less blacks as players.
- I mean fair is fair isn't it. I usually hear that the proportion of blacks in
- a given job should at least reflect their percentage of the population. I must
- say that if it is a greater percentage than this then discrimination against
- whites is occurring.
-
- Is this example a little ridiculous? Yes, but it is very analogous to what we
- hear anytime blacks are underrepresented in any job. I have been reading posts
- from this group for a while and some of things I read are ridiculous. Blacks
- are owed because of the "legacy of slavery". What? Are you kidding me? Well
- I guess I am owed because of generations of being poor. How many of you out
- there were ever slaves? I personally have never owned a slave. Then why do I
- owe you anything? Sure, slavery was a bad thing. But to blame whites for this
- is stupid. I know of not a single living person who ever owned a slave. If I
- must be held accountable for what any ancestors of mine may have done, then I
- say that you should be held accountable if one of your offspring commits a
- crime. And incidentally, have you ever thought of where you would be if
- slavery had never happened? On the coast of Africa somewhere spearing fish or
- maybe starving to death in some underdeveloped country. What would your choice
- be? It is time to stop making excuses.
-
- I grew up very poor and my family had been poor for generations. I had to work
- in excess of 40 hours a week the entire time I was at my undergraduate school.
- I was very resentful when I saw minorities handed scholarships that I would
- have easily qualified for only to see many of them drop out after a semester or
- two. Case in point. When I came to graduate school I had very good grades.
- My placement scores were very high. I got what I thought was a decent
- fellowship. There were four black students admitted with me. Their scores
- were nowhere close to mine and according to some of their grades, some of them
- would not have even been admitted if they were white. All four got fellowships
- that put mine to shame. They had a free ride for graduate school while I was
- going to have to teach every semester. Here is the kicker. One of them had
- only lived in this country for 6 years. He immigrated here from Guyana. Well
- after the first semester, two of them were gone and the other two were on
- academic probation. I could have really used one of those fellowships myself,
- but of course I was not eligible to apply.
-
- You tell me how this is fair. You tell me why it's OK to have a Miss America
- pageant for blacks only. You tell me why you scream racism every time I turn
- around. You always want to have your cake and eat it too. You want to have
- your own private events, but if you are not included in something, you scream
- racism. Take a lesson from the Koreans. They move here with nothing but a
- will to succeed and many of them do. For God's sake, this is the land of
- opportunity, so stop making excuses and screaming racism all the time. Before
- you judge me as a racist, let me tell you this. I have several black friends.
- They all know how I feel. They don't believe I am a racist, but they know that
- some of things that are promoted really piss me off. In closing, let me say
- this. All I desire is fairness. I think most of you want a little bit more
- than fairness.
