- Of course there's tons more out there, and most of these inclusions
- (most) just cover the computer underground...Some are completely wank
- and some are must-haves, even if you're not a hacker. (ie, phrack and
- lod tj, just for historical significance)
-
- |Don't let Mondo get to ya, I don't like it but what we have to do is do
- |things and talk to people, including about what we don't like about Mondo.
- |One problem I see with Mondo is that they put all their effort on the cyber
- |with no punk, also no technical section. I have often, including to them,
- |refered to Mondo as techno-hippie.
-
- Write to *them*...Don't write to alt.cp.....
-
- The battlecry of "Mondo needs punk" is heard all too-often, but yet
- have I come across anyone who has put forth a suggested list of
- subjects Mondo should cover....
-
- And for chrissakes, they cover hackers, and they basically promote
- drug use, and they rant off about the government regularly, isn't that
- punk enough? And let us not forget the Negativland surprise interview
- with The Edge....
-
- Oh, but, gee, I forgot, they're glossy and they're carried in many
- bookstores across the country, so, since they're popular that excludes
- them from any hope of being punk.
- <read: sarcasm>....
-
- |As to what to do: Find out what people in your area are doing & join in,
- |promote good zines to local stores, especially since f5 has published _The
- |World of Zines_ which is a great source of info. Contact good zines, many
- |have email addressed printed, and find out who distributes them & pass the
- |info, in the form of the distributors catalog to your local mag source.
- |I've promoted 2600 here in Berkeley & SF and it is selling well, Cody's is
- |going through over 100 copies per issue. Present an alternative to Mondo and
- |those who are not out for a fashion statment will go for it.
- |Mondo does have great interviews however.
- |Enuf ranting <fo now>
-
- Well, at least you're doing something about, unlike 99.44% of the
- people who post anger with Mondo.....Yet, I have never saw Mondo and
- 2600 as being in competition, except maybe back in the daze of High
- Frontiers/Reality Hackers, but, even then, not really.....
-
- But that brings up an interesting point - isn't 2600 overground
- enough, considering all the legal trouble they've had? And not only
- legal trouble, but, just plain harrassment on behalf of zaibatsus and
- other media? Imagine the backlash when every 12 year old hacker-wanna
- comes home with a copy of 2600, and while cleaning his room, his mom
- finds a copy with an article entitled "Steal All The Shit You
- Possibly Can From Every FedEx DropOff Box Across The Country: Here's
- How In 3 Easy Steps". Mom's will freak, write to 2600 and to other
- local media, Tipper Gore will get involved, and the thing will be
- destroyed in under 15 minutes
