- Chad, you seem to be under the mistaken impression that all
- this talk is logical and intellectually sound, when in fact
- it's a very emotional issue. Arguing logic here is missing
- the point, but I'll humor you for a few minuites longer. 8-)
-
- Your basic premise is faulty. My reason for not answering
- the phone when Caller ID is blocked is *not* that I don't
- know who's calling. As many people have pointed out,
- I don't know who's calling now, but I answer the phone anyway.
-
- No, this is subtler than that. When someone blocks their
- CID it's a power play - it's a way of saying "Nyeah, nyeah,
- I know who you are and you don't know who I am"
- and I'm not going to let them get away with that. Local
- callers have a choice - they can remain anonymous and not
- talk to me, or they can identify themselves and talk to me.
-
- As someone else has pointed out, despite all the rhetoric on
- this issue, most people (including me) will probably continue
- to answer the phone even when CID is blocked. But this
- discussion is interesting nonetheless because it helps
- us all deal with and understand issues of privacy and personal
- space in a time when both are getting harder and harder to maintain.
-
- What about video-phones? Are you going to automatically
- project your image to anyone who calls when that becomes
- available, or are you going to block video on people who
- block video to you?
