- | All this talk about blocking/not blocking calls has me in a quandry. I hate
- | inconveniences. The first inconvenience would be if send-ID was enabled by
- | default and I wanted to block it (i.e. calling a business). The second
- | inconvenience would be if send-ID was blocked by default and I was calling
- | a friend or family member. Since I and my family make about the same
- | frequency of each of the above types of calls, it's a no-win situation. It's
- | almost impossible to decide which mode to set as default, since I would have
- | to be enabling/disabling send-ID for each call. Any other thoughts on this

- There is a program available for the NeXT called "SBook". It is basically a
- free-form database which can (with a click of the mouse) print letter, send
- email and dial the phone (through a modem AT command or via the speaker). It
- allows special prefixes for long-distance, local-distance and even has a list
- of special prefixes which require a different access code. Each individual
- database entry can optionally be set up to override these defaults and be
- dialed exactly as the number appears in the text. If you set up a file for
- "friends and family" and a file for "favorite businesses", you could easily
- have the computer dial the prefix which overrides the default outgoing CNID.
- If you're usually sitting in front of a computer when you place a call to a
- business, then this program should make things easier.
-
- Of couse, a $5,000 NeXT along with a $150 piece of software is hardly a
- convenient solution to your problem, but perhaps other computers can synthesize
- DTMF through their speaker (or modem, for sure) under program control. This is
- often a good use for those $99 2400 baud modems which everyone seems to have
- lying around gathering dust.
-
- BTW, I only know the per-call prefix to diable CNID if it is on by default. Is
- there also a per-call prefix to *enable* CNID if you elect to diable outgoing
- CNID for your line?
