  24. This is one of the more surreal moments I've had on the net, I think,
  25. what with my postings history.  I'm going to pause for a moment, and
  26. note that knee-jerk liberalism is about as irritating to me as
  27. knee-jerk conservatism.  Perhaps more so, because I expect more of
  28. liberals, but that's just my bias.

  30. Somalia appears to be primarily a humanitarian operation.  There may
  31. be hints here and there of Pentagon mission-seeking and a desire by
  32. Bush to go down in the history books on a kind note, but these signs
  33. are minor compared to the substance of the mission, the security of
  34. food shipments to famine areas.  Certainly the old suspicious of US
  35. hegemonic ambitions do not apply here, and are relics of Cold War
  36. liberal attitudes.  We cannot condemn each and every deployment of
  37. troops automatically and without sharp argument.  Mr. Wells has
  38. perhaps given us an example of the calcified mind-set we should avoid
  39. if we wish to continue to argue well and relevantly.
