  15. This proposal is concurrently and simultaneously posted in alt.config
  16. soc.culture.indian soc.culture.bangladesh and alt.culture.kerala

  19. I am proposing the creation of a new newsgroup called alt.culture.bengali.
  20. This newsgroup is intented to be a place to discuss Bengali language,
  21. literature and other aspects of Bengali culture.

  23. Why another newsgroup?
  24. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  26. Bengali is a language spoken by the inhabitants of Bangladesh and three states
  27. of India, namely Assam, Tripura and West Bengal. Soc.culture.bangladesh as
  28. it currently exists, is a newsgroup for discussing the national concerns of
  29. the population of Bangladesh and is not devoted to the discussion of Bengali
  30. culture. Soc.culture.indian is another newsgroup which concerns the cultural
  31. needs of all the Indians, but does not adequately represent the individual
  32. needs of every Indian language/culture. A precedent of alt.culture.bengali
  33. can be cited in the creation of alt.culture.kerala, alt.culture.andhra and soc.
  34. culture.tamil, which were discussed to discuss the various aspects of the culture of those states.

  36. Why alt. heirarchy

  39. While I have enough indication for the interest in this group, at this stage
  40. I am cautious enough to propose the group in the alt. heirarchy. If the
  41. popularity demands otherwise, I will be willing to go through the pains of
  42. establishing a soc. heirarchy for the newsgroup. Also, since this newsgroup
  43. is mainly to  discuss the aspect of the language more than the culture,
  44. the alt. heirarchy is more appropriate than soc. heirarchy.

  49. This new newsgroup is mainly intented to discuss:
  50. (a) The structure and construction of Bengali language
  51. (b) growth of Bengali language in post-independent India
  52. (c) The literature of Bengali people
  53. (d) The men of letters.
  54. (e) Bengali language and transliteration.
  55. (f) Dialects, deviants and schools within the language.
  56. (g) Other art media that use Bengali language.
  57. (h) Bengali cultural institutions
  58. (i) Politics of power and the language.
  59. (j) Any other topic of relative merit and interest.
