- The Amber RPG mailing list has now broken quite a few subscribers'
- mail quotas (at nearly 30 messages per day before winter break set in!).
- Thanks to a massive wave of unsubscriptions from disgruntled users,
- and much gnashing of teeth on the part of the list manager, whom I
- have to live with, I think it's time to suggest an alt.* group.
-
- Therefore, I propose an alt.games.frp.amber. (My second choice for
- the name would be "alt.games.amber-rpg," which avoids spawning a
- subhierarchy. My first choice has the advantage of parallelism with
- the rec.games.frp hierarchy, though, and I think an alt.games.frp.*
- hierarchy will expand to other gaming systems.)
-
- Q&A:
-
- What for? The mailing list discusses the Amber Role-Playing Game,
- created by Eric Wujcik and Roger Zelazny, based on Zelazny's Amber
- Chronicles (the first five of which are somewhat better-known ...
- _Nine Princes in Amber_, _the Guns of Avalon_, _Sign of the Unicorn_,
- _the Hand of Oberon_, _the Courts of Chaos_). We discuss game
- mechanics in some depth, share details of our campaigns, argue
- endlessly about who could beat up whom, write long mathematical
- treatises on the structure of Shadow, exchange insults among Chaosians
- and Amberites, and so on. (The list _is_ somewhat higher signal-to-
- noise than that summary might suggest...)
-
- Why not a mainstream group? The chances of a rec.games.frp.amber
- passing are rather minimal; though a rec.games.frp.dnd exists, the
- denizens of the rec.games.frp.* hierarchy are said to be strongly
- opposed to creating subgroups for other game systems. And getting
- away from non-Amber-related traffic in rec.games.frp.misc is why
- the Amber RPG list was formed in the first place.
-
- Why not alt.fan.amber? Simple: we're interested in discussing the
- minutiae of the game system, not in endlessly analyzing the books or
- dealing with newbies who want to know what the hell "Amber" is. If
- fans of the series want to break away from rec.arts.sf.written, they
- can offer their own proposal. (As a Zelazny fanatic myself, I find
- r.a.sf.written a perfectly fine place to discuss the books.)
-
- It's been suggested that we gate the mailing list and the alt.* group,
- bidirectionally. I'm not thrilled by the prospect, but I'll let my SO
- worry about what to do with the mailing list :).
-
- [Followups are directed to alt.config.]
