- I'll throw in my two cents worth in........
-
- I had a 1542b for about a year, running both ms-dos 5.0 and esix 4.0.3.
- The bios was adequate to run both of these, then.....
-
- WHen MIcrosoft upgraded windows and I purchased a NEC cdr-84, problems
- started to happen. However, the problems were ONLY on the dos side.
- UNix worked like a champ.
-
- I could reliably get my cpu to lock up just by loading their cd driver.
- Adaptec tech support was terrible. They kept blaming my cpu for dma
- problems or my video card (diamond speedstar plus) for
- incompatibilities. However, my cpu passed the dma test. Esix didn't
- have any problems with the 1542b, and I put an older mono card in the
- box to prove it wasn't the graphic adapter.
-
- After the second or third call, they admitted they didn't know why I was
- experiencing problems. They also got extremely upset when I suggested
- that there might be bugs in their device drivers and refused to help me
- isolate the problem.
-
- I might add that Roy Neese is the only good tech that I dealt with at
- Adaptec, but his expertise is Unix. It's their MS-DOS support people
- that are lacking the appropriate skill set.
-
- To make an already long story short, I bought a Future Domain controller
- to replace the 1542. WIndows nows works good with 32bit disk access, my
- cd nows works fine, and Esix still works just fine. The Future Domain
- card may not have all the features or is as fast as the 1542b, but it
- works and FD does ahve excellant technical support.
-
- Since I work for a service orientated company, I tend to reward
- companies that provide outstanding customer support and boycott those
- that doesn't understand customer support issues. If Adaptec treats
- other customers like me, then they aren't going to be around long.
