- Castellan sits and listens to the tales of New Year's celebrations, old
- friends reunited and new friends discovered, and hopes and dreams for the
- coming year.
-
- "I spent this weekend at the annual COG New Year's conference. COG (Commun-
- ity Of Growth) is an informal organization of East Coast Unitarian young
- adults, that gets together a few times a year. I saw a lot of old friends
- and made some new ones, and got in some much-needed relaxation and cleaning
- crud out of my head. Highlights included bellowing out Tom Lehrer songs
- at 3am, listening to a long-parted friend's tales of bumming around Thailand,
- another long-parted friend's slide show of bumming around Peru, and taking a
- group shower with 15 other people.
-
- "Someone recently said `you people need to get out more.' In one respect,
- I'm inclined to agree with him. Not that I think, as he seemed to, that
- all our entire social lives revolve around the Place. I think of it as a
- reminder that this Place may be only a virtual one, consisting of electronic
- impulses across a huge, far-flung network, but the love and caring we share
- here are no less real for that than the love and caring I gave and received
- this weekend. And if we can create this sort of atmosphere in an electronic
- forum, almost never seeing each others' faces, and if a bunch of people, some
- old friends and some total strangers, can create it for a weekend (and drive
- hundreds of miles to do so), what's to stop us creating it in our own everyday
- lives? I like to think of this atmosphere as the result of people simply
- being at their most human, and getting rid of the bullshit society heaps on
- our shoulders.
-
- "So this is my toast and my resolution for the New Year: To the Place, wher-
- ever we may find it! May we continue to give of ourselves, to be open in our
- thoughts and feelings, and to liberate the beauty in us all, within the Place
- and outside it."
-
- Castellan turns and hurls his glass into the fireplace.
-
- A new year has begun.
