- The Lamplighter says, "I think you'd like to hear about our New
- Year's Eve ...." He smiles. "And if you wouldn't, then hit 'n.' It's your
- finger."
-
- "My beloved wife and sunshine-bear Aurora and I called some friends
- of ours, Jim and Lori, and decided to go to the New Year's Eve Concert for
- Peace at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, right down the street from
- where we live. So we went, and waited in a huge line (and read the signs --
- Madeleine L'Engle is apparently the cathedral librarian), and got in about
- ten people after they ran out of seats. So, we stood along the side, in a
- chapel, and watched.
-
- "The MC was Harry Smith, of CBS This Morning, and people like Li Lu
- (one of the leaders of the Tiananmen Square demonstration, now studying at
- Columbia) and Betty Friedan (a noted feminist writer) spoke. The Brooklyn
- Philharmonic played music by Haydn, Handel, Vivaldi, and others.
-
- "There was a message from the Primate of Nagorno-Karabagh. He was
- going to come himself, but there is no airplane fuel there anymore, so he
- couldn't fly out. Then Sahan Arzruni, an Armenian pianist (and last
- descendant of the last king of Armenia) played a piece by Alan Hovhaness, an
- Armenian composer.
-
- "After the candle lighting ceremony, we left, because we wanted to
- catch the 'Spinal Tap' reunion show. But we thoroughly enjoyed the concert.
- James and Lori left before the witching hour came, and Aurora and I went to
- bed shortly after. An enjoyable night, it was," and he grins, "giving me an
- opportunity to name-drop like I've never name-dropped before."
-
- "Now I must log off," he concludes, "to squeeze Aurora."
