- "So, Ewan," asks the Lamplighter, "what happens if the solstice comes
- at night?"
-
- "We just dance that evening," the poet answers. "The stones only
- work when the Sun's up."
-
- "I see. Most sensible. What do we do now?" He notices that Isidora
- has extinguished her cook-fire and is taking down her tripod.
-
- "Now we go home," Ewan says, "to be with our families and friends,
- and to relax in front of the fireplace. Loners, like Isidora and me, just go
- to the inn. Come along?"
-
- "Certainly," the Lamplighter answers. The two of them go to help
- Isidora. Ewan winds up carrying the kettle, the Lamplighter gets the tripod
- and the box of teacups, and Isidora has of course her bags of leaves and
- stems. The three take careful steps through the slippery snow toward
- Isidora's cottage.
-
- After returning Isidora's supplies to her home, they make tracks
- across the village green toward the inn. Evening has come, and the stars
- shine early and cold and close, but the wind blows only in slight sleeping
- breezes. The wooden inn door groans open at a push from Ewan, and they enter.
-
- "Hey, there, people!" shouts the innkeeper. "The fire's going, and I
- got plenty a hot drinks ready to go. What'll it be?"
-
- "Hot spiced cider for me, Thelma," says Ewan; "I've been waiting all
- year."
-
- Thelma says, "Coming right up! Isidora, it isn't often that I give
- you something hot to drink."
-
- Isidora smiles that gentle smile of hers. "I would like some hot
- cocoa, dear."
-
- "And Lamplighter, what'll you have? It's been a while."
-
- "Yes, Thelma, it has," says the Lamplighter, pondering what he wants.
- Decisions, decisions ...
