  14. Recently, I posted a message that brought news of our Galaticomm BBS
  15. system being connected to the Internet. The response has been amazing! An
  16. incredible 812 new accounts have been created from users that logged
  17. onto the system through telnet in just two days. A flood of messages came
  18. in that indicated there was lots of confusion as to what that Galacticomm
  19. system could do. Because there were so many individual messages, I decided
  20. to answer the main bulk of the confusion here...

  22. First, let me explain that CNS is connected to the Internet via a
  23. dedicated T1 through 2 SUN systems: a SUN SPARC 10 and a SUN 3/280. You
  24. may check out these systems by loggin in as "new", using password "newuser".
  25. On these systems, we support telnet, ftp, irc, wais, gopher, uucp, slip,
  26. and point-to-point connections. We also support fax services, all
  27. newsgroups including the ClariNet, and national 800 service.

  29. We have connected to these SUN SYSTEMS a 486 running Galacticomm software.
  30. This system has 32 lines local to Colorado Springs coming in. If you log
  31. onto CNS with username "bbs", the system will connect you directly to this
  32. system. In a nutshell, we have provided telnet access to the BBS by
  33. connecting it to the Internet through our SUN systems. However, this did
  34. not change the fundamental limits of the Galaticom software: It does not
  35. support ftp, newsgroups, gopher, or most any other Internet feature. To
  36. experience that, you must log into our UNIX system.

  38. Having said that, most of you our there already have access to all those
  39. Internet features. Logging onto a local BBS where the majority of users
  40. don't even know what Internet is makes for an interesting mix of people.
  41. The users on the BBS system are amazed to be talking live with someone
  42. far away... this is something that Internet users take for granted. The
  43. BBS has over 2000 active local users, very few of which understand the
  44. Internet.  In fact, many are novice users of computers.. this is why the
  45. menus may be more explicit that what you may be used to.
