- Regarding QWK packets and Internet newsgroups.
-
- This is already implemented in some (many?) places in the PC world. I
- presently read newsgroups and email via one of these systems. It
- works, but not without some hitches.
-
- Channel1 Communications in Cambridge MA, a large commercial BBS
- system, has a full-time uucp connection, evidently running under DOS.
- For their users, they run PCBoard BBS software with a "usenet
- gateway." Various "mail doors" allow downloading of QWK packets: I
- routinely use their Qmail door. I have all login, logout, upload, and
- download, automated under Telix scripts: get in/out fast because it's
- a toll call! Their mail packets are all zipped. I'm seldom online for
- more than three minutes, usually one or two.
-
- Responses are all read/written using QWK mail readers.
-
-
- SOME PROBLEMS.
-
- The PC software limits message length to around 100 lines. It splits
- longer messages into many pieces. You still get them, but it's
- somewhat inconvenient to read.
-
- Difficulties arise with UUENCODED binaries. The PCBoard software
- behaves properly, but the mail doorways and offline readers interpret
- too much of the content to be ansi control sequence--I have yet to get
- one reassembles correctly. The work-around is to go online manually
- and do a message capture and download it without ever touching it with
- QWK software. XENCODED material is handled without a hitch. Still, the
- problem of short message length persists: it's a royal pain in the a**
- to strip headers out of perhaps two-dozen messages and reassemble
- them. Like humpty-dumpty.
