- : Well, let's see how much unix costs these days:
- :
- : % ftp gatekeeper.dec.com
- : ftp> cd .0/386bsd
- : ftp> prompt
- : ftp> mget *
- : ftp> ^D
- :
- : Gee, that was pretty cheap.
- : Let's go get a good mail reader.
- :
- : ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu
- : ftp> cd packages/elm-2.3
- : ftp> prompt
- : ftp> mget elm*tar.Z
- : ftp> ^D
- :
- : That was pretty cheap too.
- : How about some good conferencing software?
- :
- : % ftp some.site.i.dont.remember.the.name.of
- : ftp> cd somedir
- : ftp> prompt
- : ftp> mget rn*tar.Z
- : ftp> ^D
- :
- : Hm. I wonder how much that cost me?
- :
- : Let's see... Unix was $0, elm was $0, and rn was $0. Looks like it didn't
- : cost me anything.
- :
- : Yeah, that makes it a lot more expensive than anything else out there.
- : not.

- Another user being very flip. That is great if you have the time to do
- that. My next question for you is how do I get a person on the phone
- right now to help me solve a problem with any of those packages you
- mentioned.
-
- If you are using something for yourself, that is great! But in the
- corporate world where people want support now and need an idea of when
- bugs will be fixed, your solution doesn't hold water.
-
- The software didn't cost you anything. But usually that is the cheapest
- part anyway. It is the time to install and maintain. And most of the
- world is DOS oriented and has absolutely no desire to learn UNIX.
