- Can't help you about a FAQ, but I can pass on my own anecdotal information
- on polysorbate 80, which I've been using for about 5 1/2 months now.
-
- I suffer from an average case of male pattern baldness, meaning that
- my hair has fallen out at the two front "corners" and the remaining
- front area is thinning, as is the hair on top of my head in general
- (though the front is the most affected so far). The polysorbate 80
- seems to have worked best on the areas where the hair was thin but
- still present--those areas seem to have stopped thinning and in fact
- are filling out again. As far as the areas at the corners that were
- completely bald, new hairs have grown in at the edges and much of
- the rest of the area is now covered with what I would call "peach fuzz"
- that can be seen under a strong light. Whether this will turn into
- honest-to-goodness hair is still up in the air. I should mention that
- I couldn't detect any difference until about 2 months ago.
-
- Your mileage may vary, of course. I seem to recall reading that
- polysorbate 80 works on about 50-70% of the adult male population,
- which is about the same success rate as minoxidil. Of course,
- unlike minoxidil, polysorbate 80 doesn't require a prescription
- and is very cheap (it costs me $6.50 for an 8-ounce bottle, and
- I've used approximately 1 3/4 bottles so far--add in $0.50 for an
- eyedropper, and we're talking a yearly expense of around $25.
- I'm guessing that minoxidil runs about $800/yr, but I could be
- off by a factor of two either way here). And in case you were
- wondering, polysorbate 80 is GRAS (you can find it added to lots
- of foods and cosmetic products to keep the ingredients from
- separating). I should add that I take a strong multivitamin
- supplement containing 150mg of B-6, the idea here being that it
- is required for your body to create histamine. Histamine release
- is supposed to be one of the mechanisms through which polysorbate
- 80 induces hair regrowth. Again, your mileage may vary.
