- Thank you, Stephen, for saying what needed to be said. Our economic
- problems are indeed so great that the only way out is the way you suggest.
- Such a solution is not without historical precedent if we recall the
- problems of the 1860's and the spiritual renewal that brought healing
- to our land. In speaking out in such a way you are almost certain to bring
- some reaction of scorn. Nonetheless, truth has always shined the brightest
- during times of darkness. With respect to our present leadership, we might
- recall the words of the English novelist and historian H. G. Wells who
- once noted:
-
- The true strength of rulers and empires lies not in armies
- or emotions, but in the belief of men that they are
- inflexibly open and truthful and legal. As soon as a
- government departs from that standard, it ceases to be
- anything more than "the gang in possession" and its days
- are numbered.
-
- I cannot help but feel that the US has become a hollowed out economic
- shell in which anything now goes. I suspect the government will
- continue to make a few more attempts to fuel the engine with more
- Iraqs, Somalias and Bosnias, but eventually it will sputter to a
- halt as philosphies built on unsound principles always do. For the
- last several decades we seem to have greatly departed from the
- Constitutional ideals inspired by faith in God and belief in the
- inalienable rights of man to one more akin to that expressed by
- Leonard Lewin in his truer than life novel "Report from Iron Mountain":
-
- The organizing principle of any society is for war. The
- basic authority of a modern state over its people resides
- in its war powers.
-
- The choice is ours.
