  58. Thank you, Stephen, for saying what needed to be said.  Our economic
  59. problems are indeed so great that the only way out is the way you suggest.
  60. Such a solution is not without historical precedent if we recall the 
  61. problems of the 1860's and the spiritual renewal that brought healing
  62. to our land. In speaking out in such a way you are almost certain to bring
  63. some reaction of scorn. Nonetheless, truth has always shined the brightest
  64. during times of darkness.  With respect to our present leadership, we might
  65. recall the words of the English novelist and historian H. G. Wells who
  66. once noted:

  68.     The true strength of rulers and empires lies not in armies
  69.     or emotions, but in the belief of men that they are
  70.     inflexibly open and truthful and legal.  As soon as a
  71.     government departs from that standard, it ceases to be
  72.     anything more than "the gang in possession" and its days

  75. I cannot help but feel that the US has become a hollowed out economic
  76. shell in which anything now goes.  I suspect the government will
  77. continue to make a few more attempts to fuel the engine with more
  78. Iraqs, Somalias and Bosnias, but eventually it will sputter to a
  79. halt as philosphies built on unsound principles always do.  For the
  80. last several decades we seem to have greatly departed from the
  81. Constitutional ideals inspired by faith in God and belief in the
  82. inalienable rights of man to one more akin to that expressed by
  83. Leonard Lewin in his truer than life novel "Report from Iron Mountain":

  85.     The organizing principle of any society is for war.  The
  86.     basic authority of a modern state over its people resides
  87.     in its war powers.
