- The following is the results of my yearly Christmas card survey. These
- figures represent the total cards received by a medium-sized manufacturing
- conglomerate in North Carolina. These cards came from all over the country:
-
- Number of cards: 102
-
- 100% Secular cards: 84
-
- These are cards with no religious symbols or terminology, barring the
- pagan trees and wreaths. "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holidays"
- prevailed, with various messages of friendship and goodwill.
-
- Mentioned Christmas: 14
-
- These cards, still otherwise completely secular, mentioned the
- particular holiday by name, usually in the context of Santa Claus.
-
- Obviously religious: 4
-
- Of these, only 2 mentioned Jesus or Christ by name. Others simply
- displayed Christian-specific symbols or scenes (3 wise men)
-
-
- Combining this with last year's data:
-
- 1991 1992*
- --------------------------------
- # cards 112 102
-
- 100% secular 95 (84.82%) 84 (82.35%)
-
- "Christmas" 11 ( 9.82%) 14 (13.73%)
-
- Religious 6 ( 5.36%) 4 ( 3.92%)
-
-
- * Personal cards received in 1992 also
- closely match this distribution, with the
- exception of (0) religious cards.
-
- What does this mean? At least, it possibly implies that refraining from
- declarations of religious belief is good business courtesy. I think it is
- one more piece of data supporting the notion that our society, overall,
- is NOT very religious in practice, despite the fact that most people, when
- pressed, will admit to some degree of belief. The evangelicals constantly
- rave about this, so maybe there's something to it after all. I think its
- evidence that the Christmas holiday is becoming, if not already, a basically
- secular event, despite the propaganda from the churches.
