Well, if they didn't, they wouldn't get any bread and wine at regular intervals..:-)
But actually that's an interesting question. Let us assume that nothing in the Bible is interpreted literally. So everythiing is figurative, mere allusion.
Imagine how many NEW religions you would be able to suck up :-)
Reality doesn't go away, even if you choose to ignore it.
