- I'm another "one in a million" (according to Chuck) who is not in
- financial debt (my assets exceed my liabilities). However, I don't have
- quite the angst about debt and credit that you do. For example,
- I often use credit cards as substitute cash (and pay the cards off each
- month) and I have an auto loan (could have paid cash but prefer to keep
- my assets liquid).
-
- I don't think it's wrong not to want to owe anything. However, you seem
- to feel stronger about being debt-free than most people I know. You
- say you want your existence to only depend on you. What do you mean
- when you say "existence" (I assume you don't mean literal existence)?
- Unless you are financially independent, your financial well-being is
- still dependent on others (employers, etc.). Being in debt doesn't
- have to mean "being in debt for the rest of your life". You sound like
- you're doing a good job of managing school and a job. You could probably
- manage paying off a loan just as well. But, then again, maybe I'm wrong.
- You're the only one that knows for sure.
-
- Some of the feelings I picked up from your post reminded me of how I
- felt when I was kid and my mom withheld my allowance for not cleaning
- my room. I decided I wouldn't depend on that allowance (or any other
- external reward or benefit) because other people could use it to
- manipulate me. Is this similar to how you're feeling?
-
- Good luck.
