- Welcome to NetNews/CD!
-
- This directory contains executables for reading news from CD-ROM in a Sun
- Sparc environment. It does not currently support other Sun architectures.
-
- We have supplied a slightly modified version of trn which we have renamed
- as cdrn.exe on the CD-ROM for you to read news with. There is also a version
- of tin which allows reading news from CD-ROM in this directory. If you are
- not familiar with trn/cdrn or tin refer to the manual pages located in the
- man directory at the top level of this CD-ROM. Both an nroff and a text
- version have been supplied. We have included the sources which has been
- modified to support CD-ROM news access. The source is located in the src
- directory at the top level of this CD-ROM. Because of the directory name
- limitations of the ISO 9660 format, certain executables have been renamed
- in order to be accessible directly from the CD-ROM.
-
- If you make modifications to the sources in order to support reading from
- a platform that we don't supply or improve the ones we do, please send us
- a copy of your changes and we will be happy to include them for the benefit
- of others.
-
- There are trn thread files available on the CD-ROM as well.
-
- To start reading news, type:
-
- $ /cdrom/bin/sparc/cdrn.exe
- or
- $ /cdrom/bin/sparc/cdtin.exe
-
- Some cdrn items to note:
-
- * cdrn is an extension of trn which is an extension of rn.
- * All the threaded features of trn have been enabled as the defaults.
- * At ANY prompt, you may type 'h' for help. There are many different help
- menus, depending on the context. Also, typing <esc>h in the middle of a
- multi-character command will list escape substitutions.
- * Typing a space to any prompt means to do the normal thing. You could
- spend all day reading news and never hit anything but the space bar.
- * This newsreader has been specifically installed for reading NetNews from
- the CD-ROM. It is not intended that it be used as your primary newsreader
- for reading non-CD news. Posting and replying to old articles has been
- disabled as the defaults within cdrn.
- * So that cdrn news reading will not interfere with your daily non-CD news
- reading, cdrn uses a directory in your home directory, .news. where it
- creates a subdirectory for each issue of NetNews/CD. The .rn* files
- and the .newsrc are stored in the issue directory. If you wish to edit
- a .newsrc file for a NetNews/CD issue, please do so in the appropriate
- issue directory. If you are not sure which issue's CD you have mounted
- the file /cdrom/issue.vol contains the issue information used as the
- path to that specific CD's issue directory. Please note that the ~News
- directory has not changed.
- * Remember, the actual news files contained within the /cdrom/spool
- subdirectories are flat ASCII text files so you can use tools like grep,
- awk or more to read and search for topics and keywords. Cdrn is *not* the
- only way to deal with the news...
