  30. The Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. aerospace industry have
  31. established guidelines for the development of flight-critical commercial
  32. software.  These guidelines, referred to as the DO-178 series, are
  33. developed through a consensus building process under the auspices of the
  34. Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics.  They represent aerospace
  35. industry standard practice and are used by the FAA during aircraft
  36. certification.

  38. Under the sponsorship of NASA and the FAA, the Research Triangle
  39. Institute defined and implemented a study to assess the effectiveness
  40. of these guidelines.  The study involved developing a real-time guidance
  41. and control software application and collecting software quality data
  42. throughout the development process.    The talk will discuss the methods
  43. used during development and the quality data collected.  Actual failure
  44. data from each life cycle phase will be presented.

  63. The Research Triangle Institute is located on Cornwallis Road in the
  64. Research Triangle Park across the street from the main IBM facility.
  65. Take I40 to the Davis Drive Exit.  If you are traveling from Chapel Hill
  66. or Durham, turn left onto Davis Drive.  If you are traveling from
  67. Raleigh, turn right onto Davis Drive.  Go to stoplight at intersection of
  68. Davis Drive and Cornwallis Road.  Turn left and then take the second left
  69. onto Institute Drive.  Go straight and follow signs to the George R.
  70. Herbert Building.  As you turn left into the Herbert Building entrance
  71. road, please park in the first lot on your right.  Enter Herbert Building
  72. at the main entrance and take the stairs up to the second floor.  Please
  73. use the elevator only if you are handicapped or have many materials to
  74. carry.  Take a left at the top of the stairs and the conference room will
  75. be at the right.  The room number is 258.
