- News Advisory:
-
- Green Corps, an independent national organization training young
- environmental leaders to become field organizers and political
- activists, will hold a press luncheon to detail its work in 30 cities
- and 25 states, on Friday, Nov. 20, at 12:30 p.m., in the Zenger Room
- of the National Press Club. (See state-by-state listing of Green
- Corps participants.)
- Green Corps is primarily funded by the U.S. Public Interest
- Research Group (U.S. PIRG), and is supported by such organizations as
- the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Audubon Society, Citizen
- Action and the Sierra Club. Participants in the initial one-year
- training class of environmental leaders were chosen from more than
- 1,000 college graduate applicants. With an individual stipend of
- $13,500 for the yearlong program, Green Corps participants were given
- a two-month "boot camp" in Boston this summer, where they were
- trained and briefed by many of the current leading environmental
- leaders in the country.
- Since being deployed to the field to work in grassroots campaigns
- across the country, Green Corps participants have worked on voter
- registration campaigns, ballot initiatives, door-to-door organizing,
- and community organizing efforts.
- Participating in the press luncheon briefing will be Gene
- Karpinski, executive director of U.S. PIRG, and Gina Collins,
- executive director of Green Corps. Background information on each of
- the 30 state and local projects Green Corps participants are working
- on will be available at the press conference.
