- There was some disgusted speculation a while back (before so many
- people had *.psu.edu in their killfiles) about what the possible
- environs of PSU could be.
-
- Last Sunday afternoon I talked to a writer friend (Kit K.) who
- described her visit to a friend (Alis. R.) whose husband now teaches
- at PSU and who just moved there this fall.
-
- Here are some data points, all at second hand:
- 1) Outside the university and the small town adjoining it, there
- lies nothing but farms, forests, fields, and snow. Lots of snow,
- from November on.
- 2) When Kit asked some of the locals if the town had any interesting
- or unusual restaurants, they thought a while and then suggested
- the local Arby's.
- 3) The university has around 40,000 students; the town has around
- 40,000 other residents.
- 4) The town had only three bookstores she could find.
- 4.a) One is the university bookstore, selling primarily textbooks;
- 4.b) One is a Dalton's;
- 4.c) The last, putatively real, bookstore opened only two years ago.
-
- It sounds tragic. I gather Alis is going slowly mad.
