  11. There was some disgusted speculation a while back (before so many
  12. people had *.psu.edu in their killfiles) about what the possible 
  13. environs of PSU could be.
  14.  
  15. Last Sunday afternoon I talked to a writer friend (Kit K.) who
  16. described her visit to a friend (Alis. R.) whose husband now teaches
  17. at PSU and who just moved there this fall.
  18.  
  19. Here are some data points, all at second hand:
  20. 1)  Outside the university and the small town adjoining it, there
  21.     lies nothing but farms, forests, fields, and snow.  Lots of snow,
  22.     from November on.
  23. 2)  When Kit asked some of the locals if the town had any interesting
  24.     or unusual restaurants, they thought a while and then suggested
  25.     the local Arby's.
  26. 3)  The university has around 40,000 students; the town has around
  27.     40,000 other residents.  
  28. 4)  The town had only three bookstores she could find.
  29.   4.a)  One is the university bookstore, selling primarily textbooks;
  30.   4.b)  One is a Dalton's;
  31.   4.c)  The last, putatively real, bookstore opened only two years ago.

  33. It sounds tragic.  I gather Alis is going slowly mad.
