- So I'm at my friends' place and we're watching Big Black on videotape
- (insert sounds of enjoyment, as it was way cool) and when it's over, we're
- playing old fantasy adventure games on their Commodore 64, because it
- still works sometimes and the nostalgia is incredible, and the phone rings.
-
- It's an ex-girlfriend of mine (the second person I ever fell in love with)
- calling from Fresno (of all places) to see how all of her friends who moved
- to Santa Cruz (being, primarily, those of us at the house that night) are
- doing.
-
- She talks to one friend, then the other. Then they hand the phone to me and
- I realize that I don't really have much to say to her. So I make small
- talk and realize that she and I have even less in common now than we did
- three years ago when we were going out. Whoops, make that four years ago.
- Shit, time is going somewhere fast.
-
- Then I remember that I actually DO have something to talk to her about: I
- ask her if she still keeps in touch with her friend Jessica, whose older
- sister was the FIRST person I ever fell in love with. Painful, that. And
- so my ex- says yes, she does keep in touch with Jessica, who is currently
- at the Air Force Academy. I'm greatly encouraged; I ask her if she thinks
- she could find out, from Jessica, where Jessica's sister is. Where could
- I write to her?
-
- She says:
- "Yeah, I'm sure Jessica could get me Amy's address. <-- ultimate high
- I think Amy got married last year." <-- ultimate low
-
- *sigh*
-
- I suppose I really shouldn't be surprised. In fact, I'm NOT. However, it
- still hit me somewhere uncomfortable. I wonder what I'll write to Amy
- about.
-
- "Hi, would you believe I still think about you every day? So, how's the
- hubby? Got any kids yet?"
-
- *sigh*
-
- Last night, I partook of the corn of joy and sorrow-- one big mouthful.
- I still have not told my current girlfriend (the THIRD person I ever fell
- in love with) about the phone call. Or that I'm going to try to get back
- in touch with Amy. Or that I'm planning to visit Fresno in a few weeks....

- I'm debating whether I should do something to feel guilty about.
