  36. |Of course he would have nothing to do with the blocking scent.

  38. |Isaac took him aside and tried to convince him of the necessity.  "You must
  39. |use the ointment to block your trail.  You must use some kind of evasion for
  40. |the crossing.

  43. |Still he refused, and eventually Isaac gave up.

  45. |We headed out into the hills, running, over the border, through the voracious
  46. |insects.  We spread out widely to increase our chances, each of us at least a
  47. |kilometer from the other.

  49. At first, we hardly noticed the transformations. After all, we didn't
  50. expect there to be no side effects at all. But after a few weeks, as
  51. our skin and hair lightened, even the color of our eyes shifted, we
  52. began to become concerned.

  54. That ended soon enough, though, and we were happy to be in our new
  55. home, and safe with our new colleagues, united for one purpose: to
  56. work together for the common welfare and defense. After all, as our
  57. leader says, "In Unity there is Conformity, and vice versa."

  59. Eventually we formed a posse and went after Peter. When we pushed him
  60. into the border zone, we laughed as we watched him trying to escape
  61. the fate that had somehow eluded him before. This time we were sure.
