- Do you work at the Borders bookstore there? do you? Well, up here
- in the cold frozen south of Michigan, we have a Borders bookstore.
- It is the first Borders bookstore. I mean, it was the one that the
- Borders boys started. well, Borders was bought by K-Mart last
- month. that's probably not news to you. in fact, i'm certain that
- you had heard about it before i did.
-
- Kmart already owns one chain of bookstore (Waldenbooks), and
- apparently they wanted a chain that appealed to an upscale crowd.
- the changes are coming fast and furious; borders just this summer
- increased their store size here by half-again, and next summer
- they will abandon that site and take over a building currently
- housing a department store. Being as ann arbor is not a big town,
- and kmart is a very big company, the news was fairly major. We had
- to stop press and run a new version of the front page when the
- news broke.
-
- Few people who live in ann arbor do not have an opinion about the
- buyout. but one woman wrote to the editor to complain that she
- cannot in good faith shop at borders any more. She protests that
- since kmart is in the business of peddling pornography (playboy),
- she refuses to give them any business.
-
- When madonna's book arrived two weeks later, i am certain that this
- woman took that as a sign that border's had irretrievably slipped
- into the hands of the sodomites.
