  18. in the cold frozen south of Michigan, we have a Borders bookstore.
  19. It is the first Borders bookstore.  I mean, it was the one that the
  20. Borders boys started.  well, Borders was bought by K-Mart last
  21. month.  that's probably not news to you.  in fact, i'm certain that
  22. you had heard about it before i did.

  24. Kmart already owns one chain of bookstore (Waldenbooks), and 
  25. apparently they wanted a chain that appealed to an upscale crowd.
  26. the changes are coming fast and furious; borders just this summer
  27. increased their store size here by half-again, and next summer
  28. they will abandon that site and take over a building currently
  29. housing a department store.  Being as ann arbor is not a big town, 
  30. and kmart is a very big company, the news was fairly major. We had 
  31. to stop press and run a new version of the front page when the
  32. news broke.

  34. Few people who live in ann arbor do not have an opinion about the
  35. buyout.  but one woman wrote to the editor to complain that she
  36. cannot in good faith shop at borders any more.  She protests that
  37. since kmart is in the business of peddling pornography (playboy),
  38. she refuses to give them any business.

  40. When madonna's book arrived two weeks later, i am certain that this
  41. woman took that as a sign that border's had irretrievably slipped
  42. into the hands of the sodomites.
