- Black and Decker. Reversible. Variable speed. Let X = pierce.
- There's a new hole in the wall. He stares into the hole. His
- eye against the wall. The people on the stairs, he can hear.
- Some bone conduction through his cheek, or maybe through his
- eye. She walks by, unseeing of his new orifice, speaking. To
- some man, saying, "It's the night air."
-
- He feels his eyeball cooling, a tiny draft through his drill
- hole; he blinks. The stairs are empty, full of night air. He
- installs a larger bit and reams out the hole. Looking at his
- fingers, chooses the left hand. The ring finger fits. In the
- dike, holding out the flood of night air.
-
- All the lights are on. The door is nailed shut. He turns and
- picks up a remote. One of the televisions comes on. Daytime,
- inside or far away, false and visible. His eyes feel warm on
- their way to find day air. He knew it was still out there in
- the night.
