- After I died I found myself drifting, not toward a light as so many
- have described, but rather into progressively deeper darkness.
- Finally, I found that I had once again assumed corporeal form and was
- walking down a tunnel with stone walls. I came to a large wooden
- door which slowly swung open as I approached.
-
- As I passed through the door I saw a large chamber, dimly lit with
- torches. In the darkness I felt more than saw several small creatures
- skittering out from underfoot. Directly in front of me was a man
- sitting on a large chair which in turn was set upon a dais.
-
- "Ah, Mr. Hoffman. Welcome," he said. He was fourty-ish with black
- hair, dark eyes, clean shaven, and extremely lean, almost gaunt.
-
- "What is this place?" I asked.
-
- "Ah, you know where you are, Mr. Hoffman." he said with a grin.
-
- I said "How could this happen - with all the work I've done -"
-
- He cut me off. "Yes, I wanted to thank you for that. It's been quite
- effective. Very productive. Hundreds might have - well, how shall I
- put it - _gone the other way_ if not for you." And again that grin.
-
- "I don't understand," I said, genuinely confused.
-
- "Tell me, Mr. Hoffman, of your opinions concerning those infected with
- the AIDS virus."
-
- I spoke rapidly as if the words were being pulled directly from my
- mind. "Most of them brought it on themselves. Sodomizers and drug
- addicts."
-
- "And that child you had removed from the school your children attend?"
- he fired back. His eyes blazoned into my soul. I felt panic rise
- within me.
-
- "That was for his own protection as well as others." I was almost
- shouting.
-
- I was grateful for the pause as he leaned back in his chair,
- satisfied. For the first time I noticed a small wiesened man standing
- next to him. This man whispered into the ear of my tormentor.
-
- "Quite right," said the man in front of me, "Thank you." Then he
- delivered a blow to the man's jaw that flung him across the room. He
- looked at me again. "Tell me about this AIDS thing," he said, each
- word a dart. "How do you think that came about?"
-
- "A test, a test from God!" I shouted.
-
- Before my words died, laughter erupted throughout the room. Laughter
- from mouths unseen and unseeable around the chamber. The man on the
- chair was laughing deeply, very loud. Suddenly he stopped and all
- others stopped instantly as well.
-
- "You fool," he said, "That wasn't God's work. It was MINE!"
