- Today I noticed that the back cover of my copy of _Borges: A Reader_
- (they mean that the book is a reader, not Borges) bears the legend
-
- ``Cover design by Blanche Nonoo.''
-
- Whenever I come to a new city I look in the telephone book to see
- how many people there are named Null and Void. Baltimore has three
- Nulls and two Voids. Philadelphia has many Nulls but no Voids. While
- we were reading the phone book last week, and discovered that there is a
- woman in Philadelphia named Paula Hlavinka, which I think must be the
- most beautiful name in the world.
-
- One of the authors of a textbook I am reading is William W. Wadge.
- Ranjit points out that it is faster to say his name than his initials.
-
- The Engineering School has automatic software to provide a user with
- a choice of usernames when they first get their computer account. The
- list is generated from their real name. I noticed (too late) that one
- person, Jun Y. O, was offered, and chose, the username `o'. You can
- write to Jun at `o@eniac.seas.upenn.edu'.
-
- Sometimes I play a phone book game: I pick a first name and try to
- find someone in the phone book with that name. You don't want to pick
- `John', of course; that would be too easy. `Siobhan' was good. I was
- at Rosa's house and we decided to look for `Rosa'. I guessed `Nunez'.
- Rosa guessed `Rodriguez'. Rosa won. There were four Rosa Rodriguezes.
-
- p.s. this is all true
