  13. Lance bought me Doc Martens for my birthday,  the tall lace-up 
  14. kind.   He got them in black.  Today I am wearing a white mock 
  15. turtle shirt, a mostly-black Guatemalan vest, faded jeans, and 
  16. black Doc Martens.   Add the motorcycle jacket, and you have a 
  17. fine outfit for walking around downtown Los Altos, which I did 
  18. at lunch today.  Los Altos, for you non-SF-Bay-Area people, is
  19. full of boutiques & hairdressers marketed at women who married
  20. lawyers in the 50s and think that their  Jag-u-ars should take
  21. the right-of-way at all intersections.

  23. I stopped at the Peet's there.  I bought a pound of beans, the 
  24. Viennese Blend and a huge black mug.

  26. The problem with the Doc Martens-- to get back to the topic of
  27. boots and leather, and off the topic of Los Altos--  is laces.
  28. It takes me five minutes to put them on.   They look great, of
  29. course.  They look babe-acious, though Lance doesn't think so,
  30. even though he gave them to me.  The other problem is the seam
  31. where that long tongue meets the upper.   The seam has a ridge
  32. on the inside of the boot, a ridge that leaves a nice red welt 
  33. across the top of my foot.  The soles are bouncey, though. And
  34. they are great for motorcycling, though the leather is thinner
  35. than totally optimal.
