- My sister-in-law is currently compiling statistics on a study she
- conducted in both Catholic schools, and public schools in the same
- city. The study asks teenage girls questions about sex (and alcohol
- and drugs) -- when was the first time they had sex (age), have
- they ever been pregnant, what they would do if they got pregnant, etc.
- So far, the average age of first sexual intercourse is about 3 months
- younger in Catholic school than in public school. A significantly
- (I think it's currently in excess of 15%) larger percentage of
- girls from Catholic schools stated that they would get an abortion
- if they discovered they were pregnant, and more (only about 5%) had
- already been pregnant and had an abortion. The girls in Catholic
- school were less likely to use birth control as well.
-
- The reason the majority of them gave for not using birth control
- was fear that their parents would find it, and they would get
- in trouble.
