  11. Last weekend I went to a friend of mines second birthday party.  I got her
  12. a little cord-less phone that talks in this little mechanical voice. It
  13. teaches her letters, numbers, and colors and such.  Anyway, she is an
  14. adorable little girl, reminds me a lot of my own daughter at that age.
  15. She is a big part of the reason I no longer support abortion restrictions.

  17. About three years ago, her mom, a very good friend of mine, discovered
  18. she was pregnant.  At the time I was a traditional pro-lifer.  She told
  19. me about her dilemma.  She hardly knew the father, her father would 
  20. disown her, she was drinking and doing drugs prior to finding out she
  21. was pregnant.  All these things lead her to believe that abortion was
  22. the only viable alternative for her.  I tried to convince her otherwise,
  23. but I was unable to.  She is a very good friend, so despite my feelings
  24. about abortion, I got her the money and went to the clinic with her.  
  25. At the time, I was thinking about what a wonderful human being I was
  26. for going against my beliefs and actually accompanying her there.  But
  27. then I came to realize that what I was doing was not so special.  I
  28. was not the one that making the bigger sacrifice.  Despite her feelings 
  29. about abortion, she knew it was the only choice available to her.  
  30. What she was doing was much more special than my small sacrifice.  
  31. The abortion was difficult for her.  Not as difficult as continuing
  32. the pregnancy, but difficult none the less.

  34. Later that year, she straightened herself out.  She met a reasonably
  35. nice guy, and I saw her suddenly grow up.  She ended up getting 
  36. pregnant, and my two year old friend is the result.

  38. Its not to difficult to imagine how this story might have turned 
  39. out if legal abortions were not available.  Its possible my
  40. friend might have been killed or injured by an illegal abortion.
  41. Its possible that she would have felt forced to continue the 
  42. first pregnancy.  I think her deciding her own fate was a big
  43. reason why she grew up so fast.  I don't think she would have
  44. faced it as well if the decision was forced on her.  I do know 
  45. that if abortion was illegal, there is a very good chance that 
  46. I would not have gone to my friends second birthday party.  So
  47. for selfish reasons in this case, I am glad abortion was safe 
  48. and legal.
