  16. Mark pointed out a lie spread by Nyikos and others in the
  17. right-to-lie movement - that every woman who requests an
  18. abortion is given one.   Either these people do not understand
  19. how clinics operate, or they're just lying again.

  21. A woman who is obviously ambivalent about her decision will not
  22. be allowed to undergo the procedure in a reputable clinic.  She
  23. will be counselled and perhaps rescheduled, but both the
  24. counselors and doctors are aware of the problems that can result
  25. if a woman is unsure of her choice.

  27. I escorted such a woman into a clinic recently.  When the
  28. sidewalk harasser showed her the little plastic fetus and
  29. said, "This is what your baby looks like and your baby loves
  30. you", the woman replied, "I love my baby but we can't afford
  31. to have one right now."  At this, the harasser (an unemployed
  32. 19 year old college student) said, "I'll pay your rent.  I'll
  33. pay your doctor bills.  I'll buy your clothes."  I told the
  34. woman that the professional counselors in the clinic could help
  35. her.   She decided to go on in.

  37. The harasser started crying, and I realized that she was just as
  38. sure that the woman was going to have an abortion that day as
  39. I was sure she was not.  Coincidentally, I saw the woman inside
  40. the clinic later that day.  (Otherwise, I'd have no way of
  41. knowing what happened.)  She told me that she had decided to
  42. continue the pregnancy, but that she was waiting inside until
  43. "those people" were gone.
