- TDY: Faith n' Footprints
-
- By: G. Joseph Peck
- NAM VET Managing Editor
- VETLink #1 - Pittsfield, MA
- (413) 443-6313
-
- "Footprints" I remember the poem. Saw it the first time when I
- was battlin' for custody of the children of my first marriage. It
- came at a time I sorely needed it. "Footprints" - a poem that
- sorta goes like:
-
- "Hey Lord! Ya said you'd ALWAYS be with me! I had a dream the
- other night. You and I were walking along the beach. Suddenly
- scenes of my past life flashed across the sky. For each scene,
- I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand - one belonged to me
- and the others were yours. When the last scenes of my life
- flashed by, I noticed that during the roughest, toughest times
- along my pathway of life, there was only ONE set of footprints.
- You said you'd ALWAYS walk with me! Why was there only ONE set?
- 'My precious, precious child,' said the Lord. 'When you noticed
- only ONE set of footprints, it was THEN that 'I' carried you."
-
- "Footprints" Many times in MY life, the ones in the sand sure
- weren't mine - even though it was MY life's path I was lookin'
- at...
-
- Many of you out here in "NamVet-world" know that I've been
- sorta beset by one crisis situation after another for the past few
- months. THIS month, I've been HAMMERED by 'em...
-
- One rainy, thunderstorm-type night I shut off VETLink #1 to
- protect it from any static electricity. When I turned it back on,
- it wouldn't come on. 1 motherboard; 1 power supply; 1 multi-I/O
- board; lotta disk reformatting/backing up and a lot of hours and
- VETLink #1 was back on-line and limping along...
- The "Footprints" then looked a little like Lefty's... and a
- little further on down the path, they look like they've been added
- to by a fellow vet named Randy when it came to getting our
- original hard disk put back in operating order... (Boy! You guys
- gots BIG feet!!!)
-
- Job after job I've applied for. Job after job I've interviewed
- for. And job after job, I've received letters that stated "Your
- qualifications are impressive. A person with your talents will do
- well. However..."
- "Footprints" - they really weren't mine then either.
-
- The US Postal Service, after all our concentrated efforts to
- finally find this disabled vet a job (ME), advised me that even if
- I were allowed to take the exam for a postal custodian, there's
- still a lifting requirement (ya MUST be able to lift continuously
- 70=75lbs). The VA says I can't lift more than 5-15 lbs. The
- Postal Service said they'd have to disqualify me for that job.
- ("But that'll be GOOD for your wife," they said. "Then SHE can
-
- NAM VET Newsletter Page 1
- Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990
-
- have your ten-points veterans' preference!")
- "Footprints" - Lord I KNOW ya got a reason for all this...
-
- In our December, 1989 CONCENTRATED SERVICE section I input the
- basic situation concerning the house/home of my family and I. In
- today's (6/17/90) local paper there appeared an advertisement
- notifying our local community of a public auction of our
- house/home on 22 June 90.
- "Footprints" - At first I saw two sets of 'em, mine and the God
- I sincerely believe in. One set seems to be fading away just now...
-
- Moderating the IVVEC... takes a special energy; a long, long
- look at wisdom and constant thinking about "What's GOOD for the
- echo" ... Even with many not-positive comments, IVVEC managed to
- right itself and find the direction in which it was originally
- sent: To BE that haven, resting place for all vets and their
- close friends. I've discovered that a LOT of "moderating" can be
- done by "sitting and watching, letting the 'quiet' voices speak
- out - and they've done well..
- "Footprints" - There are some real good ones in IVVEC...
-
- I've seen so many of you logging on to VETLink #1 and looking
- for this month's NamVet. There have been 52 file requests for it.
- All have resulted in "File Not Found" messages - or
- "BAD_REQUEST.TXT" ... Our Chief Emeritus (Retired Chief) has been
- resurrected <grin> and is typin' his fingers to the bone to get
- this issue out.
- "Footprints" - Now Todd's join the crowd...
-
- Oh my! The whole beach is filled with nothing but footprints!!!
- NamVet... IVVEC... the VetNet echoes... help with broken
- computers and software puzzles.... help with broken hard disks...
- help with it all...
-
- I'm GLAD there's so many footprints out here... "Footprints"
- of the toughest, most persistent and determined veterans in ALL of
- American history..."
-
- I'm GLAD too, that one of 'em MIGHT be mine... but for now,
- when I NEED it most, I think I'm being carried.
-
- Thanx guys n' gals... really THANX!!!
-
- I HOPE I'll still be around for next month's issue..... but
- that is in hands much more powerful than mine. I'll give it MY
- best shot - and my family and I ARE tryin' our best...
-
- 'til Next Month
- Show a brother or sister veteran
- that YOU care!!!

- Reflections in Memorium
- By: Todd Looney
- NAM VET Managing Editor
- Vietnam Veterans' Valhalla - San Jose, CA
- (408) 298-2740
-
- Memorial Day has always had a special meaning to me, as I am sure
- it does to most veterans whether they've seen combat or not. It
- is a time I reflect back on the many friends who died in Vietnam
- nearly two decades ago, and to the cause for which they gave
- their lives. I know at the time many of us were not too clear
- about why we were in southeast Asia, and many of us are still a
- little fuzzy on that issue, but I believe most of us are now
- proud of the part we played in America's history, regardless of
- its outcome.
-
- I am happy to see that a great majority of Americans now feel
- better about us veterans. It is hard sometimes to forgive them
- for putting me and my brothers and sisters through the hell we
- had to endure after returning to the "real world", but I have
- come to a point where I can put those feelings aside and take
- what society has to offer now at face value.
-
- This Memorial Day, 1990, I strolled slowly through the national
- cemetery between San Jose and San Francisco, past the countless
- stones marking the remains of literally thousands of young men
- and women who died for this country during past wars. I could
- not help but be overwhelmed at the sense of loss as though I knew
- each and every one of them, which in a way I suppose I did. The
- veterans of the Vietnam "war" are not that different from the
- veterans of WWI, WWII, or the Korean conflict if you look at them
- long enough. We were all traumatized by our experiences, and
- many of us still suffer today because of what we did and what we
- saw. Most of us were still kids when we donned the uniforms and
- answered our country's call to arms. Most of us left sweethearts
- at home and the concept of "Dear John" lingered throughout each
- era. We thought about the same things while we were fighting on
- foreign shores, and we all believed in life, liberty, and the
- pursuit of happiness. And too many of us died. I could not
- staunch the flow of the tears running down my face as I sauntered
- among the headstones thinking about who lay beneath each of them.
- All the pain they went through to protect the country they loved
- so dearly as to give up their lives for her. And for the Vietnam
- veterans, all the pain they suffered in the grave not being
- permitted to rest until America finally, at long last, allowed
- them to go their etherial way in peace.
-
- I want to apologize for this month's issue of the NAM VET being
- late. Nothing could have been done to prevent it. So many
- things are happening with both Joe and I at the same time that we
- just couldn't get it out on time. Thank you for your patience,
- as you can see, it was worth it. I hope that we gave credit
- where credit was due and didn't put someone eles byline on your
- story. I think we got it right, but you're a better judge than
- we at this point. Joe's system crashed and he did his darndest
- to get everthing straightened out. I think he did a superb job.
- So this is really a skeleton issue. Things have really changed,
- I remember when Joe and I were hollering with joy when we had
- twenty pages. Now look at it!

- Agent Orange Update, June 1990
-
- Input By: Martin H. Kroll
- NAM VETs Agent Orange Section Editor
- Fort Mountain BBS - Chatsworth, Ga. 30705
- (404) 695-8703
-
- As the mountain of evidence and information pertaining to
- Agent Orange continues to pile up it would seem that our
- government would be forced to cave in and award benefits to
- veterans that have been exposed, and they have..... to a
- certain degree. The health problems that qualify for
- receiving benefits due to "service in Vietnam" do not even
- come close to recognizing all of the ills that can be
- attributed to Agent Orange exposure.
-
- We are now in a period of time where we are seeing the
- efforts to obtain benefits taking on a frenzied pace and many
- accusative fingers are being pointed. The public at large is
- becoming more interested in the Agent Orange issue as the
- drama unfolds. Government officials are now beginning to
- realize that it could indeed be a fatal mistake to continue
- to deny the Agent Orange link to health problems suffered by
- our Vietnam veterans, and to continue to deny just
- compensation and health care may very well be political
- suicide.
-
- Congress held hearings in late April to address the issues
- that have been brought up this session. According to DAV
- Magazine (June, 1990), the 101st Congress will be dealing
- with bills pertaining to Agent Orange. The following is
- quoted from the June, 1990 issue of DAV:
-
- "One piece of legislation being considered would provide
- presumptions of service connection for NHL, soft tissue
- sarcoma, melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and chloracne.
- The bill, sponsored by Congressman Lane Evans (D-Ill.), would
- also allow the VA Secretary to add diseases to service-
- connection status based on the findings of an independent,
- scientific contract organization."
-
- The VA Deputy Secretary Anthony J. Principi has asked that
- the bill be held until October when the VA completes it's
- rule making process concerning disability claims related to
- Agent Orange exposure. This gives us plenty of time to write
- letters to our Congressmen letting them know just how we feel
- about the issue. Coupled with the fact that this is an
- election year, we can stand to gain quite a bit now by a
- letter writing campaign that is relentless. The clause which
- would allow the VA Secretary to add diseases to service-
- connection status is very important. Also of much importance
- is just which scientific contract organization will be
- awarded the job of compiling and analyzing all of the
- information. I don't think that very many of us would be
- pleased to find such an organization as the CDC in that
-
- NAM VET Newsletter Page 5
- Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990
-
- position.
-
- On another front I feel compelled to congratulate the
- American Legion's National Commander, Miles S. Epling for
- continuing to tell it like it is! Using terms such as
- "voodoo research" and "wholesale scientific fraud", he is
- certainly untiring in his efforts to expose the CDC and the
- government's attempts to cover up the truth. In Mile's June
- 1990 Commander's Message to the American Legion Membership,
- he stated "CDC studied a grand total of 166 Vietnam veterans
- with cancers, and they didn't even develop an exposure index
- to determine how much the veterans had actually been exposed
- to Agent Orange. CDC had no way of knowing the extent or
- duration of exposure. Instead, CDC used the very technique
- it had roundly condemned when used by others: "self
- reporting." That means they took the Veterans word for it."
-
- If you have been following my articles and letters, you have
- noticed that I have stated how disgusted I am in the way the
- government and the CDC has handled this whole thing. Now we
- find that it has taken over $63,000,000 of our taxpayer's
- money for the CDC to examine and "interview" a mere 166
- Vietnam veterans. Apparently, I am not the only one that is
- disgusted since Miles Epling went on further to state:
-
- "Then this reputable institution declared that it was unable
- to conduct the Agent Orange study it had proposed. Couldn't
- find enough veterans. Couldn't prove exposure. Couldn't do
- this; couldn't do that."
-
- "That's pretty interesting, especially so since the Army and
- the National Academy of Sciences developed a comprehensive
- record of Agent Orange sprayings in Vietnam, and they can
- document which units were exposed. Moreover, CDC had these
- records in it's possession. Even though CDC couldn't find a
- study group of qualified veterans with the $63 million it had
- to do the job, The American Legion and Columbia University
- were able to do so with much less than $100,000."
- "Our results underwent scientific peer review and were
- published in the prestigious scientific journal
- "Environmental Research". Our study used nearly 7,000 Vietnam
- veterans, half of whom served in Vietnam, some in areas
- identified and verified by DoD records as having been sprayed
- with Agent Orange. The other half, the control group, were
- veterans who had not served in Vietnam."
-
- Miles Epling is correct in asserting that this is "pretty
- interesting". I think that it is more than "pretty
- interesting" in regards to the CDC spending $63 million
- dollars to study 166 Vietnam veterans. As a taxpayer I would
- like to know just how they spent all of that money! I would
- like to see how they justify their expenditures for the
- results that they have obtained.
- Miles goes further with his message by stating "Look at the
- record on Agent Orange. Congress mandates a study. VA
- fumbles the ball. CDC picks it up. CDC piddles away at
- least $63 million and no one even questions where the money
- went. CDC ignores Congress' mandate to do an Agent Orange
- study, and finally conducts a study not related to Agent
- Orange. The findings, dubious at best, are released and the
- Washington bandwagon quickly fills with people ready to
-
- NAM VET Newsletter Page 6
- Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990
-
- applaud and lay this chapter behind us. Meanwhile, the Air
- Force conducted it's Ranch Hand Study, altered the results,
- falsely reported the findings, and hardly anyone murmured a
- complaint. Dr. James Clary, who blew the whistle on that
- one, asserted what we already know: herbicides made with
- dioxin can kill you. He admitted that the chemical companies
- cut corners making the military version of Agent Orange,
- greatly increasing it's potency. "However," he said,
- "because the material was to be used on the enemy, none of us
- were overly concerned. We never considered a scenario in
- which our own personnel would become contaminated."
-
- This brings to mind some of my own research findings
- pertaining to Agent Orange. Agent Orange usage was in the
- planning stages for several years before it was actually
- sprayed. In a memo to President Kennedy, Secretary of State
- Rusk stated that it was of utmost importance that the US
- Government not be associated with the chemical companies in
- order to avoid being accused of "chemical warfare" in
- Vietnam. He went further to state that they must place
- emphasis on "it's only weed killers."
-
- Why would he make these statements unless he knew at the time
- that Agent Orange and some of the other chemicals used were
- indeed harmful to the health of humans?
- It also bothers me that Agent Orange seems to be taking
- center stage while all of the other chemicals used (and there
- are many) are being overlooked. We know that Agent Orange is
- extremely toxic, but if a new study is instituted then the
- focus will be on Agent Orange. Many ailments that could
- possibly be related to some of the other chemicals may not be
- linked to Agent Orange exposure. Of course this would mean
- that many veterans that were exposed to dangerous chemicals
- may never receive the treatment or compensation that they
- should have. We should demand that ALL chemicals used in
- Vietnam be considered in any future studies! It would be too
- easy to overlook them at this point considering all of the
- fervor surrounding "Agent Orange" at this point.
-
- If you are concerned about the outcome of these issues you
- can do a lot to help by just sitting down and writing letters
- to your Congress people.... Form letters do not do much good
- because members of Congress realize that form letters are
- usually the efforts of a handful of people and many people
- will sign them just to be going along with the crowd.
- Original letters though carry clout. It is accepted that
- for every original letter received, there are a thousand
- more people out there that hold the same beliefs. It is easy
- to see that a thousand original letters will mean much more
- than several million "form letters". I urge you again to sit
- down at the keyboard and peck out letters to your
- representatives in Congress, sign them and mail them. Show
- copies of them to your friends and encourage them to do the
- same!
-
- In closing for this month, I would like to quote Miles Epling
- one more time.....
- "Every time this charade replays itself, the leaders of
- veterans' organizations are counseled to give "measured
-
- NAM VET Newsletter Page 7
- Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990
-
- responses": let's reason together and work out our
- differences. Enough is enough! Apparently some in
- Washington don't realize that real, live people are dying all
- across the country from rare disorders that shouldn't be
- occurring. They aren't statistics; they are flesh and blood
- human beings who did their duty when their country called.
- I've said it before: Vietnam veterans are being studied to
- death in the name of science and politics. We don't need
- another atomic-veteran chapter in our nation's history. This
- insanity must cease."
-
- Write those letters now friends. Your help "IS" important,
- and a few letters will certainly not take up that much of
- your time. They could mean the difference though for the
- many veterans, wives, and children that so desperately need
- the proper health care.
