  12. A FTP site devoted exclusively to Genealogy related files and programs is
  13. available at hallc1.cebaf.gov (129.57.7.19).  This site is primarily for
  14. programs as genealogy text files are available at other sites.  At
  15. present, most of the programs available are MS-DOS programs, but anyone is
  16. invited to submit programs for other platforms (unix, vms, macintosh, ...)
  17. to be archived here.  Since there is a fine archive of genealogy text files
  18. located in the ROOTS-L directory of vm1.nodak.edu, text files will be kept
  19. to a minimum.

  65. To access these files, ftp to hallc1.cebaf.gov, give anonymous as the
  66. username, and your network address as the password.  All of the genealogy
  67. files are in the subdirectories /genealogy/paf, /genealogy/programs,
  68. /genealogy/text, and /genealogy/utils.
  69.  
  70. Files that end in ".zip", "lzh" or ".exe" are binary and should be
  71. transferred in binary mode.  Files that end in anything else are probably
  72. text files and should be transferred in ASCII mode.
  73.  
  74. Binaries will usually be in ZIP format with a file extension of ".zip".  A
  75. self extracting copy of PKware's shareware programs is in the file
  76. "pkz110eu.exe".  Some files are also compressed with lharc having the
  77. ending ".lzh".  The software to unpack those files can be found in the
  78. self extracting archive "lha213.exe".  There are also several files that
  79. end with ".exe".  These are generally self extracting archives
  80.  
  81. The current listing of files on hallc1.cebaf.gov in the /genealogy
  82. anonymous ftp directory is in the file INDEX also in the /genealogy
  83. directory.

  85. If there is a program that you think should be posted, write me a note
  86. requesting it.  The file AVAILABLE contains a list of files that are
  87. available to me from a local genealogy BBS.  If you would like a file that
  88. is in the AVAILABLE list, just send me a note.  Please make sure that the
  89. file is not already available on hallc1 before requesting it.

  91. This ftp site welcomes uploads.  Files should be transferred to the directory
  92. /genealogy/Uploads.  Please send mail to saw@hallc1.cebaf.gov after uploading
  93. something.  Please include a description of what it is.
  94.  
  95. Some network users can send and receive mail, but can not use ftp.
  96. (Because they are not directly connected to internet.)  These users can
  97. still retrieve files from hallc1.cebaf.gov (or any anonymous ftp site)
  98. using a ftp mail server at the address ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com.  Cliff
  99. Manis has prepared some instructions on how to use this service.  Send
  100. mail to the address LISTSERV@VM1.NODAK.EDU, with the following line as the
  101. entire body of the message

  105. And a file with instructions will be mailed back.  If one is on a bitnet
  106. node, use the address LISTSERV@NDSUVM1 instead.

  109. hallc1.cebaf.gov will be shutting down as an anonymous ftp site for
  110. genealogy files in late January 1993.  Arrangements are being made to move
  111. this archive of files to one or more other sites, so there should be no
  112. break in the availability of genealogy programs to the internet community.
