-
- IN THIS ISSUE
-
- In this issue of the News we will be reviewing the status of Ancestral
- File(TM) the International Genealogical Index(TM), and the Family History
- Library Catalog(TM). We also announce that FamilySearch(R) will be available
- in more places including public and private libraries.
-
- Also included are articles about contributing information to Ancestral File
- and submitting personal family history experiences for a new PBS series
- called "Ancestors". There is also an update on the Genealogical Projects
- Registry.
-
- ANCESTRAL FILE: THIRD EDITION
-
- The third edition of Ancestral File is now being shipped. On seven discs,
- this edition includes all information received by December 1991. It contains
- about thirteen million names linked into families and pedigrees, three
- million more than the previous edition. In addition, over 300,000 duplicate
- records have been removed from the file.
-
- The third edition also contains corrections made to the file, including the
- names and addresses of those who submitted the corrections and their reasons
- for making the changes. This information lets you coordinate research with
- others. To find this information, press the F9 key and choose "Notes and
- History of Changes."
-
- We have begun compiling the fourth edition of the file. It will include
- information contributed between December 1991 and August 1992.
-
- INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX: 1992 EDITION
-
- The 1992 International Genealogical Index (IGI) is now being produced on
- microfiche. The Index has grown from 147 million names to about 187 million.
- The compact disc edition will be produced later.
-
- New information in the 1992 International Genealogical Index includes --
-
- - 15.5 million names from worldwide birth, christening, and marriage records.
-
- - 12.5 million names from Latter-day Saint temple baptismal records, dating
- from the l840s to 1942. This is 95 percent of these records. The rest will
- be in the next edition.
-
- - 5 million names from Latter-day Saint endowment records, dating from 1942
- to 1992. This is only a small percentage of these records. Also included on
- these records is the Latter-day Saint baptismal date.
-
- - 4.5 million names with incomplete information submitted for temple
- ordinances between 1978 and 1990 (records that did not previously qualify
- for inclusion in the Index).
-
- The microfiche for the regions of the United States and Canada are being
- distributed to family history centers, and the British regions will soon
- follow.
-
- The 1992 International Genealogical Index is not yet available for purchase.
-
- FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG: NEW EDITION
-
- A new edition of the Family History Library Catalog, dated February 1992, has
- been released on microfiche.

- diskette for use in word-processing programs. The compact disc edition
- describes library holdings as of May 1992.
-

- "ANCESTORS" PBS TELEVISION SERIES
-
- KBYU Television, in Provo, Utah, and Academy Award winning producer/director
- Sterling VanWagenen are joining forces to produce "Ancestors", a Public
- Broadcasting Service (PBS) series on genealogy and family history.
-
- "The program will be America's first in-depth look at the significance of
- searching for family roots, the detective work that is part of the search,
- and the sense of completion and identity that comes from learning about one's
- ancestors," states KBYU Station Manager Mel Rogers.
-
- Scheduled to air in late 1993, Ancestors will teach viewers how to conduct
- their own family history research.
-
- Personal family history stories are being sought for possible inclusion in
- the series. If you have a particularly dramatic episode in your family
- history or in your family history research, KBYU-TV will send you a
- questionnaire to help you report the details. To receive a questionnaire,
- please write--

- "Ancestors" will be dedicated to the memory of "Roots" author, Alex Haley.
- Before his death, Haley was an adviser in the development of "Ancestors" and
- was to host the series.
-
- GENEALOGICAL PROJECTS REGISTRY
-
- Summaries of 800 projects entered in the Genealogical Projects Registry
- database have been sent to the National Genealogical Society. Included in the
- Registry are the extraction projects of the Family History Department
- worldwide. Not all Family History Department projects are listed, however.
- For example, current Department projects not included in the registry are the
- every-name, every-column indexes of the 1880 United States census and the
- 1881 British census.
