  17.
  18. What is the ROOTS-L List and the LISTSERV ?
  19.
  20. Are you REALLY new to the Genealogy Discussion on the NET?
  21.
  22. Then read on !
  23.
  24. We have had and will have several requests for "FAQ" help (frequently asked
  25. questions) sent to the "List" and not the "Server".
  26.
  27. If you are new at this, as I was, it can be very confusing and frustrating.
  28.
  29. There are two (2) addresses that you MUST know the difference about.
  30.
  31.
  32.         1.) The 1st Address:
  33.
  34.             The mailing "LIST"   (one of these should work)
  35.
  36.                                         ROOTS-L@VM1.NODAK.EDU   (for internet)
  37.                                         ROOTS-L@NDSUVM1         (for bitnet)
  38.                                         ROOTS-L@NDSUVM1.BITNET  (has worked
  39.                                                                         for me)
  40.
  41.
  42.                                 this address reroutes your text discussions
  43.                                 to everyone "in the world", almost. If you
  44.                                 send ANYTHING here, it will be seen by
  45.                                 everyone on the Roots Mailing List (Roots-L)
  46.                                 Do NOT send Server COMMANDS here. (see next
  47.                                 paragraph)
  48.
  49.
  50.         2.) The 2nd Address
  51.
  52.             The file "SERVER"   (one of these should work)
  53.
  54.                                         LISTSERV@VM1.NODAK.EDU  (for internet)
  55.                                         LISTSERV@NDSUVM1        (for bitnet)
  56.                                         LISTSERV@NDSUVM1.BITNET  (has worked
  57.                                                                         for me)
  58.
  59.
  60.                                 this address is the computer, more or less
  61.                                 that keeps actual files of info in Fargo, ND.
  62.                                 When you send your COMMANDS for info to this
  63.                                 address you will get a reply from "a computer"
  64.                                 either giving you the info you requested or
  65.                                 error messages like "hey, you don't know
  66.                                 what you're doing
  67.
  68.
  69.
  70.
  71. So, to summarize, if you want to "chat", send your mail to the LIST.
  72. If you want to use the resources of the Roots-L (files) send your "commands"
  73. to the SERVER.
  74.
