- ROOTers:
- In my experience, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) records were not
- systematically collected by the national office as the local chapters
- (called posts) passed out of existence, and I have not been able to locate
- a central repository for even the national records.
- The Chicago Public Library operates a Grand Army of the Republic Memorial
- Museum at 78 E. Washington St., Chicago, IL 60602; (312)269-2926. It is "a
- small history museum," whose collections include "artifacts, books, manu-
- scripts, and artwork." Curator: Laura Linard.
- In Philadelphia there's the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the
- United States (MOLLUS) at 1805 Pine St., 19103; (215)546-2425. This is a
- "hereditary organization," and was "founded by officers who served in the
- Union Forces during the Civil War." MOLLUS "has historical records of
- members and organization." Recorder-in-chief: William A. Hamann III.
- I have seen a postcard of the interior of the "Grand Army Museum, built
- and maintained by National Woman's Relief Corps Auxiliary to Grand Army
- Museum, 629 S. Seventh, Springfield, IL 62703," but I was unable to find
- any additional information.
- Since the records of the local posts appear to have been dispersed, the
- best places to look for them might be nearby historical manuscript reposi-
- tories, often affiliated with colleges or universities. Be sure to check
- the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections, available at most major
- research libraries.
- The University of Missouri/State Historical Society of Missouri Western
- Historical Manuscript Collection (WHMC) has the following GAR records:
