  26. My memory is not my most reliable ally, but I'll try to paraphrase what he
  27. said to Bob Schieffer on last Sunday's _Face The Nation_.

  29. The gist of Sen. Nunn's worries is that in an organization that requires its
  30. members to spend virtually their entire time together in close quarters (i.e.,
  31. barracks), the presence of openly gay personnel would lead to other (non-gay)
  32. personnel fearing that their personal [read: sexual] privacy would be
  33. violated [by the gay personnel], thus heightening intra-unit tension and
  34. lowering morale.

  36. This is merely the kindergentler version of an old canard from the Dark Ages
  37. that was given full voice by Gen. Somebodyorother, USA (Ret.), on _This Week
  38. with David Brinkley_ that same day.  (The general in question served as head
  39. of the Joint Chiefs of Staff several Presidents ago.)  To wit [again, a para-
  40. phrase]:  "Once those queers get into the military, next thing you'll know,
  41. they'll be convertin' our fine red-blooded young men over to their preverted
  42. "lifestyle" and chasin' after any free [ass/cock -- your choice] what ain't
  43. covered!"

  45. Surprise of the day:  *George Will* actually challenged some of this guy's
  46. assumptions on the show.  (He did the same to the guest who spoke in favor
  47. of the move as well -- perhaps he was playing professor that day.)
