- Well that is true, on the surface. Fraternities were originaly secretive
- because the main purpose was to talk about politics (which at the time was
- VERY illegal), hence the need for secret handshakes, words, and challenges
- . The reason that the SAID they were meeting was to improve their academics.
- As talking politics became legal, the group (with intelectualy sounding 'Greek'
- names) then turned to an intelectual grouping. (the social aspect has always
- been there, from the begining.) The fact that the groups were started at
- universities only helped predestin it to an "academic" portrayal. (which for
- many still today is still the largest, most important goals).
