- MASKS
-
-
- From the time that I was in my early teens, and realized that I was
- expected to act a certain way, until a year or so ago, I was a mask wearer.
-
- Now if you ask my parents, they will tell you that I never wore a mask
- that they can remember, and if you are talking about the mundane, put on
- your head type of mask, they would not be lying.
-
- But, if you are talking about that type of mask which is not noticeable
- except by those who know you better than you know yourself, and who see you
- in many different environments, well, that is another story.
-
- You see, I wore more masks than I can count from the teens on until
- recently. What was the reason for all the masks?
-
- Well, it was like this. You see, I didn't want people to see me as me,
- mostly because I didn't think they would accept me. Now this is a normal
- concern of teens, but like some other things, it didn't feel right to me.
-
- As a result, I took to wearing masks in school, at home, at work, with
- friends, and with enemies. Each of these were different style masks, and I
- say with some pride that I was getting rather good at changing masks
- rapidly.
-
- But as time went on, and I grew up, my masks got more complex. I also
- had to change them more rapidly throughout the day.
-
- This got very tiresome, and I soon became sick of wearing the masks
- that told people that I was what they wanted me to be. This felt wrong to
- me, but what was I to do?
-
- It finally reached a point where I could stand the masks no more. I
- decided that I would be me, for me. Not act like someone that I wasn't
- just to please someone else.
-
- With this decision came the responsibility of doing what I had to do to
- be me. This was more than just doing what I wanted, but also taking
- responsibility for it. I would no longer hide behind a mask and let the
- mask take the blame, it was me or nothing.
-
- I did this, not because someone told me it was right, rather, because
- I knew it was right.
-
- So my question is this:
-
- Are you wearing a mask that someone wants you to wear?
