    There is no concrete evidence, just the bigotted opinions of some
military and non-military 'phobes.  There have been no studies of which I'm
aware (it would be difficult to design such a study, it seems to me, since
you'd have to do it in order to assess its effect).  There *are* several
studies supporting what you said about your lesbian friend in the military
- that gays are notable in the armed forces for their dedication,
leadership, and hard work.
    Also, gays seem to be much better at behaving themselves sexually than
their straight comrades (remember Tailhook?).  I don't know of a single
instance of a gay soldier being discharged for sexual misconduct - only for
*being* gay.  Pretty silly, and very expensive.
