- American Physical Society Award for
- Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in
- Atomic, Molecular, or Optical Physics
-
- Sponsored by members and friends of the Division of Atomic, Molecular,
- and Optical Physics
-
- Purpose: To recognize doctoral thesis research of outstanding quality
- and achievement in atomic, molecular, or optical physics and to
- encourage effective written and oral presentation of research results.
-
- Nature: The award to be given annually consists of $1000 and a certificate
- citing the contribution made by the recipient. The permanent record
- of past winners will be published annuallly as part of the program of
- the Annual Meeting of the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical
- Physics.
-
- Establishment and Support: The award was established in 1992 by the
- Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics and is sponsored
- by the members and friends of the Division of Atomic, Molecular,
- and Optical Physics.
-
- Rules and Eligibility: Doctoral students at any university in the
- United States or abroad who passed their thesis defense for the
- Ph.D. in the disciplines of atomic, molecular, or optical physics
- not more than 24 months before the nomination dealine are eligible
- for the award, with the restrictions that a student whose thesis
- advisor is a member of the Selection Committee is not eligible for
- the award during the advisor's term of service on the Committee
- and a student may be a finalist in the competition only once.
-
- Nominees are required to submit an abstract for presentation at the
- Annual Meeting of the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical
- Physics. Based on the entire nomination package, as described
- below, the Selection Committee will choose finalists who will be
- required to present their work orally in a special invited paper
- session devoted solely to such presentations. The number of
- finalists will be limited to those who can be accomodated in one

-
- (2) One copy of the abstract in standard Bulletin format. Three
- additional copies of this abstract must be submitted in the usual
- manner to the address specified in the announcement of the Annual
- Meeting of the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics.
-
- The complete nomination package must be submitted before 4 January
- 1993 to the Chair of the Selection Committee:
-
- Charles W. Clark,
- A253 Physics Building
- National Institute of Standards and Technology
