- If started in the first 24 hours, acyclovir tends to decrease duration
- and number of pox. The effect in healthy children is slight --
- averaging 20% fewer pox and 1 day less being ill. Whether or not that
- is significant depends upon your perspective (as a parent, I thought it
- was worth it). Our pediatrician does not recommend it for healthy
- children, but does prescribe it for adolescents and adults (I guess
- because they tend to get more severe symptoms and are more likely to
- scar). Other than that, don't take aspirin! (chicken pox + aspirin
- supposedly increases the risk of Reye's syndrome). Topical symptomatic
- treatments are what's left for her--oatmeal baths, soothing lotions,
- etc.
